About the Artist

Justin Beck is an artist based in Savannah, GA whose work explores introspection and the condition of his own psyche through a blend of classical and contemporary oil painting. His work often depicts the human figure a pool of darkness that is inherited from tradition, namely baroque, and romanticism. Justin is currently pursuing a masters degree at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Artist Statement

The inner tension of my mind is created by an imperfect stream of consciousness that struggles with the idea of control. I fear that I cannot control my inner dialogue and these paintings are my confession.

I place figures in a non-descript darkness where the image remains hidden until touched by a spotlight of fixation. Light sculpts the figure which serves as a language that articulates a single moment in thought. Often, I paint myself as a reclamation of a years-long anxiety of my bones – my thinness, and make it the rigid structure in which my paintings are built.

I create these paintings so that I can see myself more clearly. I do not believe that this struggle is unique, and I invite those who view the work to face themselves and sit with their own mind.
